The world-s busiest legislative chambers - the houses of parliament in london’s westminster - are open for public tours for just a few weeks each year. this summer visitors can take the informative, 75-minute tours from august 2 - october 5. new this year are more in languages other than english: french, german, italian and spanish versions are available daily. also new - in westminster hall, oldest part of the historic building - is a chance to see an exhibition about 17th century treason. "the gunpowder plot: parliament and treason 1605" marks the 400th anniversary of guy fawkes- failed attempt to blow up king and parliament.
as well as the chambers of the house of lords and house of commons, visitors see the queen-s robing room, the royal gallery, st. stephen-s hall and much more, including ornate victorian-gothic decoration and paintings and frescoes of kings, queens and great moments in british history. at the end it is possible to view the exhibition (on until nov. 18), purchase exclusive souvenirs and visit the jubilee cafe. the houses of parliament are also known as the palace of westminster, and there has been a royal palace there ever since king canute built the first in the 11th century. henry viii donated the building to parliament as its permanent home in 1512, though most of the present building dates from the 19th century.
