An ulster bar and restaurant declared this year’s northern ireland pub of the year in a tourist board competition has been painstakingly restored. curran’s bar and seafood steakhouse has been the social centre of the chapeltown, county down area since the 18th century.
built in 1791, it passed from generation to generation of the same family, being particularly noted for boisterous farewell parties for those emigrating to the ‘new world’: the family had five brothers who left for america in the same week. in 2003 the present curran family carried out extensive refurbishment and have created one of the finest bars and restaurants in the area. still a family orientated meeting place, only fresh, local ingredients are used, such as steaks and fish from nearby ardglass. situated on the ulster way long-distance footpath, curran’s is 25 minutes from the royal county down golf course. curran’s bar and seafood steakhouse, 83 strangford road, chapeltown. tel: 028 44 841332.
